The Washington Monument, with its white columns, has always been the center of the nation’s capital, and its monument is one of the most recognizable in the world.
But over the past two decades, the memorial has become more and more expensive.
That’s because of changes to federal guidelines, which say that all federal structures must have a price tag.
So now, the White House says, the price of the monument will be $3,500 per square foot.
This article was updated on March 14, 2021, to reflect that the monument has been $3 million over the years.
It was $3m in 1980.
